About David Wilkins

David Wilkins has been a freelance motoring writer since 2003. His work mainly appears in the UK's Independent titles.

David was born in Gloucester in 1962 but spent much of his childhood in Germany, a fact that probably explains his twin passions for cars and technology. He studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Oxford and also holds a Masters degree from City University. After early jobs in banking and consulting, he worked throughout the Internet boom as a telecoms and technology industry analyst before belatedly taking up the occupation he first thought of when he was sixteen years old.

A reformed petrol-head, David now probably spends more time worrying about MPG than MPH, and likes electric cars and hybrids - which probably won't save our planet but do contain a lot of interesting new technology.

David is also a news and politics junkie, and an inactive member of the Labour Party who still nurses the forlorn hope that Tony Blair might one day be persuaded to return to the leadership. He recently cancelled his Sky subscription in an effort to cure himself of his embarrassing and time-consuming Fox News habit, and lives in East Anglia, which is a bit flat but has lots of nice empty roads.
