About Jerry Hayes

Jerry Hayes was the Conservative MP for Harlow from 1983 to 1997. Very much to the left of the Party, he lead a whole range of rebellions at what he thought were the excesses of Thatcherism, particularly on health matters, culminating in the near defeat of the government’s plans to abolish the free sight test and dental check up. The majority was reduced to just four.

When Major came to power he became a PPS in the Northern Ireland Office when the peace process began. As a backbencher he introduced and sponsored a number of private members bills. The Video recordings Act, The sexual offences Act being just two.

Jerry is also well known for his broadcasting. Party Pieces on capital Radio, a regular show on LBC with Ken Livingstone Charlie Kennedy and Michael Parkinson Right Left and Centre on BskyB and doing notoriously silly things on the James whale Show. With appearances on Have I got News For You, Annie’s Bar and April Friday. He, with Austen Mitchell Tony Banks and Charlie Kennedy were the first politicians to regularly review newspapers on Television. He still broadcasts and presents and reviews books for the Spectator online.

Since losing his seat in 1997 Jerry returned to the Bar where he is a leading criminal Barrister where he specialises in high profile murder, rapes and drugs cases. While he was building up his practice he was political editor of PUNCH magazine and wrote a column in the SUN.

He is a keen coalitionist a paid up Cameroon and thinks that most right wing journalists should be in secure accommodation.

He also used to get delightfully drunk at book launches in Iain Dale’s sadly missed Politicos.
