About Kate Hoey

Kate Hoey has been the Labour Member of Parliament for Vauxhall since a by-election in 1989.

Born in Northern Ireland she attended Belfast Royal Academy and qualified as a Physical Education teacher at the Ulster College of Physical Education before going on gain an Economics Degree in London. She was a Vice President of the National union of Students when Jack Straw was president. After teaching in Further Education she

worked with apprentice footballers at London football clubs and prior to entering Parliament she was educational adviser to Arsenal Football Club from 1985 to 1989.

Kate was Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Home Office from 1998 to 1999, and Minister for Sport in the Department of Culture, Media and Sport from 1999 to 2001. She questioned the legacy benefits of London hosting the Olympics but has actively promoted sport in schools. She has never been afraid to champion the rights of legitimate shooters and opposed the handgun ban in Parliament.

Kate Hoey is independent minded and has often rebelled against her party eg on the Iraq war,Top up Fees and ID cards. She is a supporter of the Plege campaign for a referendum on the EU and campaigned for a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty. She chairs the Parliamentary All party group on Zimbabwe and has visited that country undercover on a number of occasions in the last 10 years.

Kate opposed the ban on hunting with hounds and is the current chairman of the Countryside Alliance whose headquartes is in he constituency. She agreed to become the Mayors unpaid Commissioner for Sport and advises Boris Johnson on grassroots sport.

She has been a trustee of the Outward Bound charity since October 2002 and is a Vice President of the British Wheelchair Basketball Association.

Kate increased her majority at the last general election.
