Born in Bendigo (1950) Stone grew up on a public housing estate in Wodonga Victoria. He trained as a primary school teacher and later barrister. He is an alumnus of Melbourne, Adelaide, Sturt and the Australian National University. He was briefly a Visiting Fellow at Cambridge (International Law). He is a Fellow of the Australian institute of Company Directors, Australian Institute of Management and Australian College of Educators.
He was elected to the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly in 1990 and over the next 10 years he held a number of portfolios, including Attorney-General, Education and the Arts, Employment and Training, Mines and Energy, Industries and Development, and Asian Relations and Trade.
Stone was Chief Minister from 1995 to 1999; he retired undefeated and was elected Federal President of the Liberal Party of Australia. He served in that position 6 years during the Howard Government. He is Assistant Chairman of the International Democratic Union and has served as an Expert Panelist on political parties IDEA, Stockholm.
Stone is a company director of Australian and UK based public and private entities.
He has been conferred awards from Indonesia and Malaysia. On 12 June 2006, in the Queen's Birthday Honours list, he was awarded Australia's highest civilian honour awarded for eminent achievement and merit of the highest degree in service to Australia or humanity at large, the Companion of the Order of Australia (AC).
